By PRISGRADS Project
As the PRISGRADS project reaches its final chapter, it leaves behind a new inspiration for the way we view collaboration across the prison sectors in Europe. Being the first of its kind, the project reimagined how prisons recruit talent – and not through the same old narratives.
Breaking the Mold in Prison Recruitment
For decades, correctional services have struggled with a systemic challenge: the persistent inability to attract and retain professionals. Traditional recruitment channels, steeped in outdated practices and narrow candidate pools, have long contributed to chronic staffing shortages and a massive impact on the well-being of those continuing to stand on the frontlines of service.
Enter PRISGRADS.
The project’s innovative approach reimagines the pathway into prison service. By targeting university graduates—particularly those who have not yet considered working in prisons and who have a drive for social impact—the initiative suggests a crucial mindset shift. Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed Unlocked Graduates programme in the UK, PRISGRADS has laid the foundation for thinking outside the box and challenging entrenched assumptions about who can excel in correctional roles.
A Comprehensive Approach to Training
Embracing Complexity with Modern Training Methodologies
It’s one thing to hire brilliant people; it’s another to equip them for the realities of the prison environment. PRISGRADS meets this challenge head-on by developing training modules that go far beyond the basics of security and control. Instead, the project emphasizes:
● Leadership Development: Future prison leaders are taught not just to manage but to innovate and inspire. The competencies developed focus on harnessing the transformative power of human connection.
● Emotional Intelligence: Recognising that correctional environments are as emotionally charged as they are physically demanding, training places significant weight on empathy, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution.
● Real-World Scenario Exercises: Simulated environments, role-playing, and scenario-based learning ensure that new recruits face practical challenges in controlled settings before stepping into the real world.
From Firefighting to Forward Thinking
In many high-pressure environments, including our own correctional settings, a reactive “firefighting” approach has long been the norm. Imagine a day when an unexpected crisis forces staff to scramble—much like a team of firefighters rushing to douse an inferno. In one memorable instance, a minor incident escalated into chaos because the response was purely reactive, with staff scrambling to manage the fallout instead of having pre-planned strategies in place.
PRISGRADS has shown us that we can and must move beyond this culture. Rather than continuously dousing fires, our new training philosophy emphasizes proactive measures, continuous learning, and structured development. By transforming our mindset—from reacting in emergency mode to cultivating a culture of sustainable growth—we not only enhance the effectiveness of prison operations but also safeguard the well-being of our professionals.

Bold Innovations, Lasting Impact
Future-Proofing the Correctional Workforce
The insights garnered from PRISGRADS offer more than just a temporary fix. They lay the groundwork for a future in which prison recruitment and training become proactive, dynamic, and adaptable. Imagine a system where:
● Continuous Learning: Training doesn’t stop at induction. Ongoing professional development and skill refinement become the norm, ensuring that prison officers are always prepared for evolving challenges. On-going staff challenges no longer inhibit personal and career development—we’re moving from a culture of firefighting to one of growth.
● Cross-Sector Collaboration: By forging stronger links between academia, government, and non-profits, PRISGRADS suggests that future initiatives must create robust, sustainable pipelines of talent.
● Enhanced Professional Identity: With greater support, mentorship, and clear career trajectories, prison staff can feel empowered in their essential and incredible service to the public.
A Small-Scale Partnership with Vast Potential
It is important to note that PRISGRADS started as a small-scale partnership under the auspices of the EU and the Erasmus+ programme. These funding and collaborative opportunities allowed a handful of dedicated organisations to pioneer innovative approaches in prison recruitment and training. While modest in scale, the project’s success has illuminated the vast potential of these international platforms to drive systemic change. The partnership may have been small, but it has set in motion a wave of innovation that we continue to build upon—one that promises to expand and evolve across Europe and beyond.
From Legacy to Transformation
The PRISGRADS project demonstrates that innovative recruitment strategies and forward-thinking training best practices are not just theoretical ideals—they are practical, scalable solutions that can redefine our correctional systems. The ripple effects are clear:
● Positive Societal Impact: A correctional system that actively engages with the community sends a powerful message about the value of rehabilitation, reinvention, and crime reduction.
● Empowered Professionals: New recruits are not merely cogs in a machine—they are leaders, innovators, and change agents ready to redefine the future of prison services.
A Call for Continued Change
As we stand at the end of the PRISGRADS journey, it’s clear that innovative ideas and changemaking agendas continue to unlock tremendous potential for reform. Policy-makers, educational institutions, and correctional administrators must maintain their commitment to these new pathways. It is only through sustained investment and collaborative effort that the groundbreaking practices introduced by PRISGRADS can be fully realised and adapted into a unified support system across Europe.
The transformation of prison recruitment and training is not merely a project milestone—it is a call to action. By embracing bold strategies to nurture the talents of tomorrow, we can create correctional systems that are not only secure but also just, sustainable, and forward-thinking.

PRISGRADS is an Erasmus+ -funded KA210-VET – Small-scale partnership in vocational education and training between RICHTUNGSWECHSEL, INTERCHANGE (DE) and CPIP (RO). This project actively supports the Pact for Skills ‘Liberate Skills’ and its pledge to increase the professionalisation of correctional staff. Evidenced by Unlocked Graduates, the project maps the potential for innovation in vocational training by introducing university graduates to the prison service and providing opportunities in leadership and development through prison staff mentoring.
