Pretrial detention as “ultima ratio”: an imperative for Criminal Justice Systems

Often fuelled by a punitive social climate, there are frequent calls to increase incarceration and build more prisons. Even if urgently needed in some countries to replace sometimes very old, outdated, and degraded prison infrastructure, building more prisons can be an unreasonable solution. Alternative measures are essential. We interviewed magistrates, correctional leaders, and NGO representatives to understand their work in modernising justice systems and their views on reducing pretrial detention. We also present noteworthy cases from different continents on how jurisdictions are reducing pretrial detention. Read More

Where does your jurisdiction stand in the Digital Transition/ Transformation journey?

The introduction of digital technologies in your agency should not be left in the hands of IT professionals or even tusted and experienced practitioners. Technical and operational expertise are key, but a future envisioning strategic approach will definitely make a difference.  To help build structured digital transformation efforts, we bring you the expert's opinions and research, the lived experience of decision-makers and brief case presentations on how different jurisdictions have adopted specific technology solutions benefiting incarcerated persons and staff. Beyond the Gate: If you believe that your mandate to keep society safe is solely about what happens within your Prisons, you have got it all wrong…

To address the underlying causes of criminal behaviour, rooted in socio-economic disparities, mental health issues, and systemic injustices, leaders have been challenged to look beyond the boundaries of their systems and institutions and actively engage with other agencies, policymakers, and the broader community. In this edition, we feature interviews with correctional leaders and articles by experts on transforming the system through upstream and downstream collaborations, policy reforms, digital technologies, and community engagement. The Hidden Epidemic: Organised Crime in Prisons and the Threat to Societal Safety

Violent extremism and the infiltration of organised crime within prisons threaten the very essence of correctional facilities. Prisons, rather than rehabilitating offenders, often become training grounds for further criminal activity. Ignoring this threat is not an option. Proactive, comprehensive strategies are vital to prevent our prisons from becoming hostages of crime. In this edition, we share expert perspectives and insights from decision-makers facing these challenges, and what results were achieved through the strategies adopted in different jurisdictions. Shaping safe, productive, and future-proof correctional facilities

The design of correctional facilities shapes the daily experiences of both incarcerated individuals and staff, influencing rehabilitation, security, and operational efficiency. Beyond ensuring physical security, well-planned spaces for education, vocational training, and therapeutic programmes encourage engagement in constructive activities, ultimately reducing recidivism. In this edition, we explore how architecture, smart technologies, and alternative financing models are driving the evolution of modern prisons, featuring insights from correctional leaders and experts on creating environments that prioritise safety, rehabilitation, and long-term adaptability.
